What exactly defines us as Catholics? Should we speak of one Catholic identity, or “Catholic identities”, in the plural? Without a doubt, we are Catholics shaped by history, culture, and the pluralism of our society. We are Catholics in the city.
To better understand and attempt to define ourselves, this issue of Hi Fi involves us in a three-step process. First, we examine the history of Catholicism in Québec (English version online). Second, we recount experiences of being Catholic today. Finally, we look to the future of our faith (English version online).
I hope this issue will allow us to reflect on ”catholicity”, that is, the notion that being Catholic implies a constant connection – a solidarity – with the whole Church and with all of humanity. When we think of the various liturgical rites, communities, spiritualities, and cultures of our Church, as well as the pluralistic age in which we live, catholicity becomes a challenge. Being Catholic challenges us to “hold together all the aspects of the whole”, striving for unity while respecting our differences…
