A Message from the Apostolic Nunzio to Canada

Ottawa, November 21 , 2014
Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Dear Men and Women Religious ,

In a few days the ‘journey’ of the Year dedicated to Consecrated Life, will begin.

I think the image of ‘a journey’ is quite beautiful. It brings to mind new horizons that the person who journeys continually finds, and the goal or goals that can be reached. Therefore, from my heart I truly wish each of yo u a ‘good journey’! Above all a journey which is made always new through love; a journey made in the Love of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit; and in the love given, received and shared with one’s sisters and brothers.

I like to recall the three major objectives, which according to Cardinal Joao Braz de Aviz, Prefect of the Congregation for the Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, should inform and enrich the Year dedicated to Consecrated Life:
- have a “grateful memory” o f t he recent past, in particular, the 50 years after the Second Vatican Council which was an extraordinary event for the whole Church and in particular for Consecrated Life;

- embrace the future with hope, in the certainty that consecrated life will never di sappear from the Church, because “ it is wanted by Jesus himself as an irremovable part of his Church.” (Benedict XVI to the Brasilian Bishops during their Ad Limina visit, Nov.5, 2010);

- live the present with passion by giving witness to the beauty of follo wing Christ in the many ways through which consecrated life is lived, deepening friendship with Christ and sharing with our brothers and sisters.

Given that the present moment is the only time we have to live, let us help each other to dwell in the present with love, and to look to the future with hope. In fact, although we know that Consecrated Life is passing through a time of difficulty and crisis, this cannot distract us and make us sad, because Religious men and women should console human ity and awaken its spirit.

As a sign of gratitude and esteem for all those in Consecrated Life, I have prepared a reflec tion on how each one of us can become “ promoter s of vocations”, and generate a ‘vocation - culture ’ . I offer it to you, in the certainty t hat in this Year dedicated to Consecrated Life, the Lord wants to give to His Church new and abundant vocations for this special consecration.

I journey with you, in the house of God who is Love
