The Sacrament of Forgiveness - which is also called the Sacrament of Penance or Sacrament of Reconciliation - has as its goal to reestablish our relationship with God, which we have destroyed or damaged through sin. Three conditions are necessary for receiving this sacrament: 1) to be sorry for our sins and to have the resolve to not commit them again (known as «contrition»); to commit ourselves to make restitution, as much as this is possible, for the harm which we have caused through our sins (known as «satisfaction»); to confess our sins to a priest (known as «confession»).We can receive and celebrate this Sacrament of Forgiveness through an encounter with a priest in Church, in the rectory. We can also receive this sacrament by participating in Communal Celebrations of Penance offered in many parishes during the Season of Advent and Lent. Information regarding the reception of the Sacrament of Penance is available from your local parish. |
